Advantages and drawbacks of SLA 3D printing

Stereolithography (SLA) is a powerful 3D Printing method that produces extremely accurate and high-resolution SLA 3D printed parts that are capable of being used directly in end-use, low-volume production, or for rapid prototyping. It actually offers higher resolution printing than many other 3D Printing technologies, allowing you to print 3D parts with fine details and surface finishes.

SLA can produce parts with very high dimensional accuracy and intricate details.

SLA parts have a very smooth surface finish, making them ideal for visual prototypes.

Speciality SLA materials are available, such as clear, flexible and castable resins.

DRAWBACKS

DRAWBACKS

SLA parts are generally brittle and not suitable for functional prototypes, though industrial SLA can produce more functional components for this stage.

The mechanical properties and visual appearance of SLA parts will degrade over time when the parts are exposed to sunlight.

Support structures are always required and post-processing is necessary to remove the visual marks left on the SLA part.

Accura 7820

Accura 7820 is a durable material for general purpose prototyping. Its deep black color and glossy, cosmetic up-facing surfaces offer the appearance of a molded part. Part sidewalls and down-facing surfaces will have a matte finish. The material has good dimensional stability and moisture resistance.

Accura Xtreme Gray

Accura Xtreme Gray is a widely used, all-purpose material that provides flexibility relative to other SLA resins. It is an ideal stereolithography material for durability and heat tolerance. Parts built with ABS-Like Gray will have a look and feel similar to an injection-molded part.

Accura Xtreme White 200

Accura Xtreme White 200

Accura Xtreme White 200 is a widely used, all-purpose material that provides flexibility relative to other SLA resins. It is an ideal stereolithography material for durability. Compared to the average value for injection-molded ABS, it will have a slightly higher tensile strength but lower elongation at break. ABS-Like White’s heat deflection is the lowest of all SLA materials.

Accura 5530

Accura 5530 is best used for parts that need strength and stiffness combined with high temperature resistance. With a thermal post-cure, the part’s heat deflection can be improved even further, but at the expense of durability.

Somos 9120

Somos 9120

Somos 9120 is translucent in appearance. It’s also the most flexible stereolithography material available with a flexural modulus of 1,600 MPa (232 ksi). Its mechanical properties are similar to the average values of injection-molded polypropylene except for a slightly lower elongation at break.

Surface finishes can serve either a functional or aesthetic purpose. Surface finishes that serve both purposes are deemed cosmetic finishes, and are used for cosmetic parts. Producing cosmetic parts requires additional measures to minimize defects such as hang marks and scratches from tools.

Details

Clear Coat

Clear cosmetic finish that can be applied to ABS-Like Translucent/Clear (WaterShed XC 11122) and PC-Like Translucent/Clear (Accura 60) materials.

Painting

After smoothing the part with sanding and polishing, parts can be painted with automotive-grade paint. Provide a pantone color with your quote request. We also offer soft-touch painting.

Plating

Electroless nickel plating can be used to achieve parts that are similar to cast aluminum or magnesium.

Dyeing

Dyeing is another method for adding color to 3D prints. This is faster option with a limited color selection, so is a more cost-effective choice than painting.

Decaling

Decaling can be used to add a logo or other graphics to boost cosmetics or function.

Polishing

We can polish parts to a mirror-like finish. If this is a requirement, we ask that you provide either a drawing or image that indicates your finish expectations.

Heat Treatment

Harden and strengthen metal 3D prints with multiple heat treatment options: NADCAP heat treatment, hot isostatic pressing (HIP), solution annealing, and aging.
